Our rivers
Your rivers and ours
it's all the big water
one aquatic membership
in a great militant
Hydrology.
Some rivers clean a lot
of plates, others replace
York boats, take polar bears
to spots where the char
run out
Some float flotsam fit for
a picaresque, Hatfields
and McCoys, others dam
through June and bite
everything that moves.
Your rivers and mine
fight over knowing
whether eddies or tides
can track a storm best
The sky, like a curling
rink, a water polo pool
or a team from the tropics
Who flies their elbows high
in a regulation arena, it pisses
on human fire.
The bridge over one of our
shared rivers is named Gordie
(Howe the hell did that happen)
But the real question is
what role did rivers play
in making ours
a republic and ours
a dominion.
